Fair Trade Gold Jewelry
We have a traceable, transparent and sustainable supply chain
Because Amalena goes into the mining communities, we are able to target regions in need of economic support, and source our gold from the areas most in need of a boon to development. Our one rule is that the gold must come from responsible artisanal and small-scale mines. This is ensured by working only with local organizations who pursue this objective. In our case, this organization is ASOMIRCOL (see “Fair Mine” for more on this worthy organization).
Amalena seeks not only to source ethical gold, but to bring income opportunities and provide capacity-building to other actors in the jewelry supply chain, particularly local artisans. We share core values with the mining communities, and are committed to handling every facet of the supply chain – from the depths of the mines to the hands of the savvy consumer. This means we bring gold directly to local artisans. Amalena recognizes, protects, and promotes the cultural identity and traditional skills of small producers, and works with Minajoya (a local goldsmith cooperative) to ensure our commitment is upheld.
With due diligence, our supply chain follows the guidelines within the OECD “Guidance for Supply Chain of Minerals from Conflict-affected and High-risk Areas, Supplement on Gold.” ”Link:Link: Gold Supplement (PDF Format)
We create income opportunities
Unfortunately, most jewelers in small or remote communities must juggle multiple occupations in order to sustain their families and incomes. The aim of Amalena is to give these artisans the opportunity for a steady income. Our support allows them devote time to their passion for art, and to explore their creativity through creating luxury handmade jewelry.
These opportunities help our artisans to raise their income and save money to invest in education. Because the small town where our artisans live is far from the cities where classes are available, it requires additional funds to provide transportation, accommodation, and enrollment in the program of their choice. Designing and creating jewelry with Amalena helps them to achieve this goal.
We pay fair prices
Since we source our gold from responsible artisanal mines, we pay an international standard price for the metals, in addition to local royalties.
We pay our artisans a fair wage for their work, beautiful handicraft and artistic input – an important feature that our customers can feel good about. Our artisans dedicate a long time to designing and creating unique pieces for you: telling stories about nature and the traditions where they live.
Amalena strongly rejects and opposes any form of child labor and forced labor in any activity, particularly in mining and production of jewelry.
We respect the environment
A big pillar of responsible mining is respect for the environment. Our commitment to the environment is in all we do – from the source of the metal and the processing of the gold, to the manufacturing of our jewelry.
We promote and practice fair trade
We bring the idea of fair trade to isolated mining communities, improving their standards of living and empowering the community to know their worth.
